All you wanted is for your grandma to look at you with the same fondness as she looks at your little brother. Or even glance your way, or smile. That’s how a little girl, Stacy, feels in the story “Ribbons”. But, will this story workout? This story follows the plotline of a comedy, relates to real life, and has unique characters.
First of all, this story follows the plotline of a comedy. It starts with a conflict because the grandma, paw-paw, arrives and is very mean to Stacy, but is very kind and loving to her brother. However, the real conflict begins when her grandmother sees the silk ribbons on Stacy’s ballet slippers and tries to take them away, having the wrong idea about them. Stacy then soon realizes the conflict when her mother tells her all about the awful things that happened the her grandmother with the silk ribbons when she was younger. Her parents would tightly wrap the silk ribbons around her feet, bending them in a unnatural ways so they would look “pretty” so rich men would marry her. Conflict resolution finally occurs when Stacy goes and talks to her grandma telling her what the ribbons were really used for: dancing. The grandma then says that she is sorry, but she just didn’t want Stacy to go through the same pain that she went through. That’s how the story “Ribbons” ends; the conflict is resolved and all is back to normal.
“Ribbons” relates to real life very well, even if everything in real life doesn’t always end happily because people often misunderstand or misjudge people or situations. Both the grandma and Stacy had those problems. The grandma didn’t talk to Stacy about all of the problems that she had keeping them bottled up making her angry, that’s why all the trouble started. But, Stacy started judging her grandmother quickly, not knowing all of the problems and hardships her grandma had in her life. That’s how things go in real life; people often don’t speak of their problems when they should, then people misjudge them not knowing the full story. Things could be a lot easier if we just spoke up.
Each the Grandma and Stacey have some obvious characteristics about them and there are some not so obvious things about them as well. First of all, the obvious things are the physical things like how they look. The grandma has dark hair pulled into a tight bun on her head, and looks very Chinese. But, Stacy looks mostly Caucasian; she has brown hair, fair skin, but she does have the Chinese eyes. The other characteristics about them are inside; their feelings and outlook on life. The Grandma had a lot of problems in her past life, and now is a very angry bottled up person. She needs to just move on from the past and forget about all of the bad things. Stacy on the other hand had a great past with her loving family doing the thing she loved best: dancing. But, Stacy does not understand why her grandma is so mean and angry, which makes Stacy angry inside wondering what she ever did wrong. That again comes back to the topic of why things could’ve been so much easier, and better if they’d just talked to each other.
With the plotline of a comedy, how this story relates to real life, and the analysis on the main characters in the story, this remarkable story “Ribbons” really focuses on how you shouldn’t keep things inside, and really in the story “Ribbons” there would’ve never been a problem if they just communicated with each other and talked about all of their issues with each other, and otherwise. Like the grandmother said in the story, “So much to learn…So much to learn.” So, just talk.
